I've spent hours and hours into my nights trying so hard to alter paths, makefiles, install missing libs and trying to track down why it keeps saying, "can't find path". The thing that kills me, I mean really stabs hard is that the f*cker builds on Linux without a hitch. I felt some vindication the other day when I went to build on OSX and it failed due to missing libs. I feel angry at myself for spending so much time on this with no results. I'd like to be able to put some sort of positive spin on it but I'm just to tired.
Unfortunately, at this time, building Io on Win32 can be quite a headache. There was
someone in the IRC channel a couple weeks ago redoing the VC7 project file, but I'm not sure where he went or if he completed it. Could anyone with a recent working win32 version of IoDesktop.exe please post it? There are older and semi-working version around but I would like a recent one if possible.
It's little comfort right at this moment, but I'm working on an alternative build system for Io that should make building on Win32 several orders of magnitude easier. However, currently it only builds IoVM it does not build ioDesktop or ioServer.
And lastly in regards to the static binding... Is it really worth all this Steve? I mean really? I've lost a lot of sleep over this. And, I've always considered it bad design and limiting myself but that's just me.
T
he justification for this was so that everything "just worked." I.e., a user need not have to make sure he's got 5 other dependencies installed first. Personally, I don't like the idea much, but I digress.

Right in the middle of getting Io to build in vc7 the insensitive sod
took off the the UK for a few weeks! (If the insensitive sod in
question is listening, his work is appreciated, and his return is
eagerly awaited.)

That would be nice. Though it probably wouldn't help me much because I
only have VC6. :P

Hmm? Do tell.

Yeah, I know about that. I was trying to be ironic. I mean the pain I've
gone through... It's literally been months now try at various times,
staying up all night... And yet he seems to think it makes it easer.

further because that's all I needed (at this moment). I had to make
one small change to io2c.c to make it work.
I guess a vc6 project would be of more use (since vc7 and vc8 would
open it) but IIRC installing vc6 on a machine that already has 7 or 8
is asking for trouble. Maybe a simple nmake makefile would be better
than a project file since it would work with most compilers? I think
vc6 would actually write out a makefile?
It looked to me like some small changes to _build.io would
get most of the other io specific code to build. I would imagine that
things like freetype might not "just build" with _build.io which would
be a reason not to bother with this route. Someone correct me if that
evaluation is wrong.
I was also put off doing any more work by various mentions of other
build systems being introduced.
(I am back from the UK, it was cold, wet and grey)
