I went down that path Lee. Yes, they should work, and
probably do,
when you can find a card that has the right revision of the
chipset.
However, I bought two cards I had to return. The box was
labeled as
the correct Wireless NIC, but when you got it home it turned
out the
chipset had a different PCI ID and it wasn't supported by
the Linux
drivers.

Now, I'm sure that it's all butterfly's and rainbows
today, but I've
totally given up on Linux wireless support and just use
these external
devices. I'll never intentionally go back based on the
history I've
had, but I will always attempt to use Linux support if I buy
a machine
with a wireless NIC in it. I won't depend on it working
though. Hate
the stuff at this point.

I think the way I'm doing it probably saves me money
because I have 2
or 3 machines at each point in the house. Instead of buying
a wireless
card for each machine and having compatibility/support
problems which
do not get addressed in a time frame I'm interested in I
buy one WAP
for each location and it works immediately and costs less.
It's about
$50-$60/room.

To each his own. I only responded here because you gave
answer that
was inconsistent with my experience of using wireless for
higher
bandwidth apps than a few computers sending a single audio
stream.

Have a great weekend,
Mark

That's a bummer. I've heard many similar stories.

I was just wondering what devices should be avoided, but it
sounds like
you had bad results with all of them.

Mostly, yes.

Also, since manufacturer's change the chipsets without
changing the
model number of the card it gets to where you have to look
at revision
numbers on the boards which makes it almost impossible in my
experience to really make a recommendation that holds water.
Sorry.

I have much better experience with wifi. My notebook's
ipw2200 work
flawlessly. As well as MSI-US54G usb stick (ralink chipset).

Dmitry.
