I think jackdmp should be a part of the official jack
package actually. I
think the jackd binary should provide a switch to select
whether to
use jackdmp or the old one. That way, more people will try
jackdmp, and
after that we'll see what happens.
Another reason for doing so is that if jackdmp will be
continued to be
"ignored", people/distributions might switch over
(because jackdmp simply
performs better than the alternative) and forget about the
old jack, and
causing things like transport and jackmidi not to be used.
(although, that
might not be such a bad thing, do those things really belong
in jack?)
Not that its very difficult to switch between oldjack and
jackdmp right
now either ("make install"/"make remove"
in the linux directory in
jackdmp), but I don't think many people bother.

Isn't much of the point of jack-midi sample-accuracy and
freewheeling
support? How should that work if it wasn't in jack?

Strongly disagree. What a horrible mess that would become
over time...
Two completely different implementations in a single
package, ick.
I vote jack gets pushed out as 1.0 with whatever critical
things that
need fixing fixed, and jackdmp becomes 2.0 and thus free to
fix/change/etc whatever without the continual
"compatibility" excuse
halting progress.
Let's get a Jack 1.0 first and /then/ deal with the jackdmp
situation,
or we'll never have one...

I've got some time to work on video jack this week, so I
will try to
make a definitive set of patches and plugins.
Hope that will help.
Gabriel.

I think we can perfectly keep 2 separated packages but with
a re-
worked installation system for jackdmp that would be less
intrusive
than the current situation (the way i described yesterday)
and that
would allow people to easily and dynamically switch between
the 2
packages.
Concerning jack I would be happy to see the (never
reached...) 1.0
version coming out, but won't spend more time working on
that.
