Note: Running jackd as root is not recommended.

But since you choose to do so, have you tried not sudo'ing
but doing a 
real 'su - root' (or real root login) and then running the
it?

The freebob driver seems to run fine, so this is most likely
a jackd 
problem. Hence I CC'ed the jackit-devel mailing list.

The first thing you should check is whether there are
multiple jackd's 
installed, i.e. a collision between the ubuntu packaged
version and the 
one you compiled:

if both /usr/lib/jack/ and /usr/local/lib/jack/ exist, this
is happening.

Can you pass the output of "find /usr/ -name 'libjack*'
2> /dev/null"?
