I just received the following email from the FreePascal guys.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the licensing issue?

-------- Original Message --------

Hello Dominique,

We are considering to include a subset of JEDI-SDL in FPC SVN. However,
there are a few issues with licensing. FPC libraries are licensed under
LGPL plus a static linking exception, while JEDI-SDL is MPL. Preferable
we need to include it under the same license. It is believed by some that
the MPL is even incompatible with the LGPL, which would make it even
illegal to use JEDI-SDL itself, since the SDL library it links to is
licensed under the LGPL. Do you think it would be possible to double
license JEDI-SDL or at least a subset of it?

Greetings,

Daniël Mantione

Hey Dom,
I'm pretty much out of the pascal stuff these days. The code that I did
for stream passing for bitmaps, can go to whatever license you want.
Consider it yours.

Definitely agree with FPC developers. I mean, dual license
whole JEDI-
SDL and allow for inclusion in FPC. Both JEDI-SDL and FPC
will gain
by inclusion of JEDI-SDL inside default FPC installation.
JEDI-SDL
will be more popular, easier to install for everyone
(remember our
discussion about Linux packages for JEDI-SDL ? This work
will not be
needed if JEDI-SDL will be simply included as part of FPC
packages).
This particular thread originated from discussion on fpc
mail lists
about Graph unit implementation based on SDL.

The only problems are legal (can we relicense the code ?),
but
1. As nicely pointed by Daniel, if MPL and LGPL are
incompatible,
then JEDI-SDL would be never legal at all (since JEDI-SDL is
MPL and
SDL is LGPL)
2. Anyway, it shouldn't be a problem if major contributors
to the
JEDI-SDL code agree. I would assume that if noone objects on
this
mailing list then we're OK.

Mozilla once faced similar relicensing, see http://www.mozilla.org/
MPL/relicensing-faq.html

Why was the MPL license chosen? And why not the LGPL?
