Thread: Voice/Video over Jabber?

Voice/Video over Jabber?

I regularly convert friend's machines from Windows (usually
XP) to
Linux (Usually Ubuntu or Fedora). A recent convert is a very
heavy IM
user, who needs an IM client that has these capabilities:
1) Text chat
2) Voice chat
3) Video chat
4) Send File

And it needs to work with these protocols:
1) MSN
2) Yahoo
3) ICQ

Is there a Linux Jabber client that provides the above
capabilities,
for the above protocols? I would prefer a QT client as she
is using
KDE, but any client will do. Thanks in advance.

Heck, we're still working to get all those working well in
Jabber.

We work on Jabber here, not closed technologies.

There *are* multi-protocol clients like Pidgin that support
Jabber and
closed technologies like MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ. But I don't
know if they
do text, voice, video, and file transfer for MSN, Yahoo, and
ICQ. Each
one of those closed silos does things in a different way.

Pidgin and the other multi-protocoll clients just do text
and maybe file
transfer. Voice and video are not available for them. File
transfer does
work with some clients. I remember testing it with pidgin on
ICQ and it
worked.

Thanks. I understand that Jabber can work with gateways to
the other protocols:

That's why I asked.

A: Because it messes up the order in which people normally
read text.
Q: Why is top-posting such a bad thing?

Thanks. Pidgin and Kopete both could not do voice over
Yahoo,
something that apparently is very important to this user.
Thanks,
anyway.

If you want chat, text, voice and video all-in-one, you're
better off
with a decent SIP client like OpenWengo. You can chat with
people on any
major network and you can do video and voice. Video and
voice goes over
SIP obviously. And it is cross platform.
