What I'm thinking of, is when the Ubuntu installation is
finished,
and you're setting up a user account, it gives you the
option to
register an XMPP account with a Ubuntu server.

The desktop could then include links to MUC forums for
technical
support and general chat. A quick search found the
following:

h
ttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/EasyCollaborationWithJabber

There's some technical considerations raised (e.g., can MUC
support
hundreds of users?). That page hasn't been touched in over
a
year, so no idea how valid the concerns still are. I had
MUC
running once a couple of years back, but never had more
than
three users.

The biggest issue would be the non-technical one of
splitting
support between IRC and XMPP.

Haven't Google done something similar? Or did they open
their extensions?

Related: Mozilla recently created an XMPP based support
system for
Firefox...if they integrate this support system into future
Firefox
releases... B-)

AFAIK Google's extensions are at least documented. But they
also do
not yet support the latest Jingle spec versions.

There's no reason an IRC network can't support the newer
XMPP MUC standard as
well.

Their extensions have been open from day 1, I think.
