JAVA_HOME enviroment variable

Dear list,

I have installed java 1.4 in suse 9.2.  Now " echo
$JAVA_HOME"   shows  
/usr/lib/jvm/jre
but when I enter the bin directory of slide then  "
echo $JAVA_HOME"   
returns nothing.
SO I manually set the value from command line and now "
echo
$JAVA_HOME"  returns /usr/lib/jvm/jre

but after firing up the   startup.sh  I reports
========================
The JAVA_HOME environment variable is not defined
This environment variable is needed to run this program
====================================

how can I fix this problem ? thanks in advanced.

I assume your jdk installation is located in the directory 
/usr/local/JDK1_5_02. If not substitute that for your own
installation  dir
  
  export JAVA_HOME=/usr/local/JDK1_5_02
  export PATH=$PATH:$/bin
  
  copy and paste or type this two commands on your shell
window and hit enter key
  
  Alternatively
  Copy and paste the command in your /etc/profile
  save and close
  
  One of this two stuffs should work for you
