Thanks for your kind response. I don't have
/usr/local/JDK1_5_02 in my
sytem. here is what I have
----------------------
ls /usr/lib/jvm/java

. .. bin include jre lib
-----------------------------

so here is my /etc/profile
-----------------------------------
JAVA_HOME=/usr/lib/jvm/java
export JAVA_HOME
CATALINA_HOME=/root/slide/jakarta-slide-2.1-tomcat-5.0.28
export CATALINA_HOME
----------------------------------

CATALINA_HOME is where I unpack the package.

now  startup.sh reports
=======================

Using CATALINA_BASE:
/root/slide/jakarta-slide-2.1-tomcat-5.0.28
Using CATALINA_HOME:
/root/slide/jakarta-slide-2.1-tomcat-5.0.28
Using CATALINA_TMPDIR:
/root/slide/jakarta-slide-2.1-tomcat-5.0.28/temp
Using JAVA_HOME:       /usr/lib/jvm/java
=================================

but  http://localhost:8080/sli
de is not working and there is no 8080 port as open
here.
I have checked with nmap. kindly help
