Not creating version when using proppatch

Hi,

I wanted to know if there was a way to not create a new
version of a file
when I do a proppatch on the file.  I do not user
auto-versioning.

I would like the property to be replaced on the existing
file rather than
creating a new version.

If the file is checked-out before, and not cheched back in
afterwards, 
there shouldn't be any new version.
