Ras,

no, install-media is a seperate file which can be
downloaded/obtained
from juniper. Its a dump of what is on the pcmcia card you
get when you
buy a box and thus can be rewritten on the pcmciacard to
e.g. update it.

Doesnt really make sense, but i guess its used to somewhat
clear the
bootsector? Shouldnt be neccessary since its beeing
rewritten anyway by
the command afterwards which writes the dump to the card
incl.
bootsector.

It's quite typical in the Free/Net/OpenBSD world!  

It clears the boot sector and DOS partition map so that the
Unix map will be found and processed correctly.

But that's done by dd'ing the image to the flash anyway?!

Yup, that's the point of "direct disk" which, if
I'm not mistaken, is what
"dd" stands for.

Sector-level copying, so you don't have to worry about
exciting things like
partition tables and fun stuff like that.
