Linda,
I actually have ZoomText but I don't use it for magnification. I use
it to reverse my colors when a program doesn't do it automatically.
Here's a tip for your father in law in case he too has an issue with
not being able to see black text on a white background. If he runs
into a program that doesn't reverse his colors, tell him to go to
Accessories (in windows) and change his color scheme from his
customized settings to Windows Classic. Then turn on ZoomText and
select the Colors tab. He can reverse the colors this way by making
everything that was white now black, and everything that was black
now white. Of course he won't be able to see anything else, so when
he's finished with that particular program he just needs to go back
to Accessories and select his customized color scheme and then go
back to ZoomText and click Normal under the Colors tab. It sounds
like so much more work than it is. In reality it takes about 5
seconds.
The reason I don't use ZoomText other than when I just need to
reverse my colors when it doens't do it automatically is because I
have my colors and fonts set so that I can see them easily. In
Firefox and IE I have it set to ignore Windows colors and fonts and
use my own. If your father in law has trouble seeing pages on the
internet this is another great option for him. I just have everything
set to a blue background with white text and my font is Arial bold
size 12. I need it to be bold in order for it to be comfortable,
otherwise I struggle.
My monitor is only 15" which most people would say is too small these
day, but I had a 17" and I didn't like it. My sister has a 19"
monitor which is totally out of the question for me. I have Retinitis
Pigmentosa which means I have no peripheral vision (or night vision)
and my central vision is pretty blurred. When I go to the movies I
need to sit all the way in the back, otherwise all I see on the
screen is what's directly in front of me. The further back I sit the
more I can see. So with a large monitor it's just too big. I can't
see anything on the screen if it's too big. So although everyone
wants bigger and bigger monitors these days I'm happy with my
15Incher. Now my tv on the other hand is a whole other story, but
that's different.
Thanks for posting that link though. It's nice to know that others
are experiencing the same thing too. Oh and yes, Robert is truly
amazing!

OK, Wendy. I will take the bait. Here is an "amazing" suggestion. It will
lower your launch time from 5 seconds to 3 seconds:
Make a shortcut to ZoomText, and put it in your Quick Launch Taskbar, so it
is always visible. (Rt. click, Send to Desktop, drag shortcut to Taskbar.)
Saves 3 clicks.
