Well, Robert, as usual, you are thee miracle worker...you have managed to accidentally solve two problems at once today. And maybe this will solve Jack's problem as well. A month or so ago, I went into the mouse/touchpad/pointer settings and attempted to mess around with the settings there, thinking that the jumping cursor problem was somewhere in there. When nothing I did there seemed to make a difference, I gave up and have simply "tolerated" this extremely annoying situation, until I saw Jack's message this morning and saw that he was continuing to struggle with the same issue.
So, when Robert mentioned the Keyboard settings, a place I didn't think to look since I thought it had something to do with the touchpad settings being too sensitive, I seemed to have stumbled upon the answer. Nothing to do with drivers, but there is a setting in there about a cursor "blink rate" which has settings from None to Fast....that setting was maxed out to the right on "Fast." Since I don't really know what the blink rate is or what it does, I simply moved it toward the middle of the spectrum and I've now typed two e-mails without once having the cursor take me to some other place in my e-mail....it generally happens once every couple of sentences. If his only happens in MS Word for Jack, I am not sure that this would be his problem, but it has definitely been the saving grace for me.
Once again, thanks Robert, and I am glad that you are "pointing" with new found confidence today. The gods and computer gremlins are, once again, "with" us and I will look forward to seeing/knowing if any of us this helps in Jack's situation.

Well, Nancy, I do not have the answer on the "jumping cursor." But, none of
us will ever forget "Jump'n Jack Flash." So, in thinking about it, I remembered
my occasional problem with a "Jumping Mouse Pointer." This is a far more serious
problem, I am sure you will agree. And, just maybe, we can shed some light for
one another. In the absence of bad karma, or the gods playing with us, as they
so often do, there is a simple explanation. Unfortunately, we know not what it
is--yet.
So, inspired to think about this situation, I could not recall a similar
problem, except when I inadvertently drag a phrase to an inconvenient place. The
problem I have, and I know that others do as well, is a mouse pointer, jumping
to a location for no apparent reason.
If you are not paying attention, you end up clicking on things you never
intended. But, I believe I have discovered the solution: There is a
setting, in Control Panel/Mouse Properties/Pointer Options/Enhance Pointer
Precision, which moves the pointer to a spot where the little man inside Windows
thinks you want to go. Alas, he is often wrong. So, I unchecked the box,
regaining forever the control of my mouse, enhancing my self-esteem, and
enabling me to project myself with a newfound confidence and energy. It
does seem to have solved that problem.
Now, the other problem must be similar; but, I do not yet know the answer.
Perhaps someone will have his/her imagination spurred by this
revelation. We shall see.
My guess is that, as with the pesky mouse pointer, the jumping cursor is in
the settings. The change in hardware in Nancy's computer was only indirectly the
cause, I believe. But, I see nothing in the keyboard settings that suggests an
answer. A possibility would be the driver. Perhaps a new KB driver would be
better. Or, in Nancy's case, perhaps an older version? But, look in your KB
Properties, as there may be a suggestion there.
Thanks for the inspiration. One problem solved!

Word -- Laptop
A little more feedback on the "jump
ing" cursor as I have the
same problem as Jack. I too don't believe that I am touching the
"touchpad" thus causing the cursor to jump. The cursor jumps when I am
in MS Word or Corel WP or when typing an e-mail via the Gmail website.
And I don't know if this sheds any light for the great computer minds....I did
not have this problem for the first three years with my laptop. This
problem started when, under warranty, Dell replaced the mother board and then
the hard drive. This makes no sense to me, but then, life in the
computer world seems all to often a mystery for me anyway.
So,
Jack - you're not alone. Doesn't that make you feel better?
No? Well, we'll wait and see what the great guru minds have to say...No
pressure, guys.

Group Members and Gurus,
I had previously inquired why, while
using MS Word 2003 with a laptop, when typing a sentence, all or part of it
might suddenly jump to another sentence or paragraph. One response was that
I must be hitting the touch tone pad during the typing to cause the
situation.
I have experimented and have found the above to occur
even when my hand is no where near the touch tone pad. I am wondering if the
typing gets ahead of the processor in the computer causing it to (forgive
the pun) ill compute? However, even having said that, on occasion the problem
occurs even when slowing down the typing speed, although not as much. I
would point out that the situation rarely occurs with a desk top.
Any comments are appreciated.
