Robert,
Well, I guess the best thing for me to do is "fuggedaboutit" and call AT&T. However, I did gain some knowledge from your email as I always do when I read your responses. I was hoping my problem could be solved more easily. I"ll keep working on it.
Thanks...Marion

Marion, first you need to determine the voltage, the polarity, and the
amps, or wattage. If the amps or watts of a power supply are adequate, and the
voltage is the same, then you need to know whether the tip or ring is + or -. If
this is baffling, the kindest thing to say is, "fuggedaboudit." There is
no sense spending money, and time, and ending up burning out the modem/router.
Some of the specs may be available on the internet. I gather the unit
you have acquired is used. In either case, I would Google to get
opinions on the device. If it is not rated highly, it might be best to buy
something else. Power supplies are expensive, as they are designed for
specific units. I have a universal one, which allows adjustments for all of the
above factors, within its rated wattage. But, that is still a bit of bother.
So, see if the unit is worth keeping. If so, see about getting a deal
on the power supply that is designed for the unit. Otherwise, you may
be better off getting a router, and using the old modem.
Another important consideration is, will the modem, and software, be
compatible with your present DSL service. You may have to check with them to
find out.
Let us know what your search uncovers.
~~Robert

modem/router
Hi,For several years I have had SBC/AT&T DSL using
the modem that theygave me at that time. (speed stream 5100 B) Now I am
going to addanother computer and have been given a 2 wire 1701 HG
Gatewaymodem/router. It needs a new power supply and I am wondering if I
canuse the same power supply that I have been using with my
presentmodem, or are they not interchangeable. If not, what would I need
toget to be compatible with this 2 wire modem/router?Thanks for
your advice,Marion

Marion, I may have to revise my comments. From what you and Brian have
said, the actual power supply, or transformer, is integral to the unit. In that
case, all you need is a power cord. Even a rapacious supplier cannot charge too
much for that. If it is a standard cord, like the cord on a computer, a generic
one may do. Perhaps you ought to see if you can find a picture of the jack,
or diagram, or specs, or see if the jack is the same as your computer, or
???
But, before you do that, check to see if it is compatible with your DSL
service.

Marion:
Whooops. I tried to find a diagram of the unit. The diagram I found is not
entirely explicit as to whether it includes yours. But, I gather that, as
originally supposed, it does have an external power supply, or
transformer, or AC adapter. (Different names for the same thing: A unit to
change 120 Volts AC to perhaps 12 Volts DC. So, original comments
apply. It would help if you had the old one, to use in comparing to a new one.
You can likely find a suitable one, with diligence, bearing in mind the items I
mentioned before. Just possibly the P/S from your existing modem might work.
But, back to first check with the ISP, for compatibility.
