To: ALL OF MY FRIENDS, ACQUAINTANCES, AND NEIGHBORS and THOSE WHO ARE NOT SO:

I have a three year old desktop E-machine, Model T3256. When I go to "My Computer" I have drives C through I. When I put in a USB Flash Drive, Drive J pops up and when I remove it Drive J disappears.

This is all well and good except for the fact that with the USB Flash Drive in the USB port, the computer pops up a sign that says: "Please insert a disc into drive J" -- but the Flash Drive is already in drive J! Of course I can't transfer any information from the hard drive to the Flash Drive. The Flash Drive works great in my Toshiba laptop and I have no problem transferring information from there.

About now, as George Goebel once said: In a world of tuxedos I feel like a pair of brown shoes. Any ideas folks? (and as usual, thanks in advance).

One problem with removable media is that sometimes the OS have trouble
assigning a driver letter, thus the drive seems not to be accessible.
This is especially so when there are lots of drives, permeant or
removable. One thing that sometimes works if the drive which does not
show up is not defective is to try to reduce the number of devices.
Unplug re-movables that are otherwise functioning OK. Use disk
management [right click my computer and click manage] to reassign
drive litters to that there are no empty spaces from C on down. Then
reboot, plug in the troublesome drive to see if it shows up. Doe the
tone sound indicating that a USB device has been found? It not the
drive may still have a problem, don't ask me what.
