Robert..
I'm not sure what's with this Yahoo group, but this is the last response I received from you regarding this modem issue. Then I went to look at the old messages and found #18618 and 18619 were also responses which DID NOT appear in my inbox. Wonder why...
Anyway, I called AT#T and was told I cannot use my present power supply with this modem/router I want to use. (1701 HG ). So I spent some time with Mr Google and found a forum where others using the same modem were also looking for a power supply. Fortunately for me, and a couple others, one person found a phone number to contact the two wire company directly, and they sent him the power supply free of charge.
(Incidently AT&T wanted $10 for the unit and $13.50 to send it.)
So I called the number he provided and was told the same thing. How lucky was that !!
Now I'll see what they send.
Thanks for your responses..which I almost missed

Marion, first you need to determine the voltage, the polarity, and the
amps, or wattage. If the amps or watts of a power supply are adequate, and the
voltage is the same, then you need to know whether the tip or ring is + or -. If
this is baffling, the kindest thing to say is, "fuggedaboudit." There is
no sense spending money, and time, and ending up burning out the modem/router.
Some of the specs may be available on the internet. I gather the unit
you have acquired is used. In either case, I would Google to get
opinions on the device. If it is not rated highly, it might be best to buy
something else. Power supplies are expensive, as they are designed for
specific units. I have a universal one, which allows adjustments for all of the
above factors, within its rated wattage. But, that is still a bit of bother.
So, see if the unit is worth keeping. If so, see about getting a deal
on the power supply that is designed for the unit. Otherwise, you may
be better off getting a router, and using the old modem.
Another important consideration is, will the modem, and software, be
compatible with your present DSL service. You may have to check with them to
find out.
Let us know what your search uncovers.

modem/router
Hi,For several years I have had SBC/AT&T DSL using
the modem that theygave me at that time. (speed stream 5100 B) Now I am
going to addanother computer and have been given a 2 wire 1701 HG
Gatewaymodem/router. It needs a new power supply and I am wondering if I
canuse the same power supply that I have been using with my
presentmodem, or are they not interchangeable. If not, what would I need
toget to be compatible with this 2 wire modem/router?Thanks for
your advice,Marion

Marion, because you have AT&T, you did not get the message that
ATT&T had been losing emails. So, it is good that you went to the Yahoo
site. One never knows what will turn up there.
Let us know what is happening.
