Hi:

I want to get more memory for my PC, but I don't know what to get. I
ran Belarc Advisor, and I got the following information:

Processor
733 megahertz IDTSamuel 2
32 kilobyte primary memory cache

System Model
VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8601
Enclosure Type: Desktop

Main Board
Board: M787CLR
Bus Clock: 133 megahertz
BIOS: Award Software International, Inc. 6.00 PG 07/31/2001

Memory Modules
248 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot 'BANK_0' is Empty
Slot 'BANK_1' has 128 MB
Slot 'BANK_2' has 128 MB
Slot 'BANK_3' is Empty

Fry's has a sale on Memory today. It's the 2GB DDR2 PC6400 Dual
Memory. Will this 2GB Memory work for my PC?

Thanks,
Brian

chanbr,

> but I don't know what to get.

I assume that you mean that you want to know how much ram to add to
your computer. The first thing you need to know is how much ram you
have now. One thing I don;t like about Windows is that there are way
too many places to go to find out about your computer and where to
change system settings. My Macs have a lot fewer places to go.

Anyway, the built in Windows component that you need to learn about
the hardware and software on your PC is 'System Information. To get
there use Start, Accessories, System Tools, System Information. What
you need is on the first page, no need to click any submenus. If your
computer is a fairly new one it may have from 256 Megabytes to 512
Megabytes of ram. [A megabyte is a million bytes. A byte is 8 bits.
Actually a Megabyte is 1048576 bytes.

For most users 512 Megabytes is the sweet spot, the point where you
will get the best bang for the buck.

The best place to go for ram [that I know of is] Crucial.com. Or just
Google for 'computer memory'. At Crucial you enter the brand and model
of your computer and you will receive a list of recommended memory
modules and their price, etc.

Well, Brian, PC6400 is not for your system. One thing Belarc does not do is give sufficient info on memory specs. Then again, that is not what they are about.

The best way to know what memory to use would be to use a "Configurator," as found at Crucial.com, or Kingston.com. If you go to the site on your computer, it will tell you what you have, but with the RAM details that Belarc.com leaves out. Therefore, you will be able to match your present RAM, if possible, or select modules that fit, and are compatible.

If you choose not to buy from them, you will still have the correct specs with which to shop. (Buying from manufacturers often costs more. Newegg.com is much better, especially because they have extensive customer reviews.)

Go here, and have your system scanned, which will be very helpful in determining what you have, and what you can use:
