TO: THOSE WITH KNOWLEDGE
My son has a Toshiba Laptop Model A105. It's about 2 1/2 yrs old. While under warranty, the CD/DVD combo burner went out and was replaced. Now it appears that this has happened again. The movies play very slowly and the sound is crackling. The question is: Assuming that the burner is bad, how easy are these to replace in a laptop, and is there any special brand etc. that one should look for?
Again, in advance, thanks.

The internal CD/DVD would be Proprietary. I am not familiar with that model, so I am not sure how easy it is to replace. If you have the owners manual it would show how to remove the DVD player if it was meant to be removed. Some just pop out and others you have to take the whole laptop apart. Is the video and sound alway slow and crackling or does it play fine for a little while and then goes bad? I assume you have tried other DVDs and have the same problem. Any problems playing a music CD?

Assuming that it is bad, it looks like they're VERY easy to remove!
Just remove one screw, and then pull the drive out!!
Here's a tutorial on how to remove the motherboard ... you don't have
to go that far, just to the point of removing the DVD drive (Step 6
and 7)

The picture doesn't show exactly which one screw you need to remove,
but with the laptop upside down, it would be the screw nearest the
door that slides open on the CD.
