Hi
I don't see how connecting a camera via USB, without installing the
proprietary software, can hurt either the camera or the computer.
There is the chance that installing the software includes whatever
driver necessary to make the camera "visible" to the computer, but if
it works, as you say, without it, I don't see what harm could be
caused.
