I'd been hooking direct for quite awhile, until I read somewhere that
method could damage the camera software. Other info I've gathered on
the subject indicates that a card reader is the way to go...and I now
use a pretty straightforward SanDisk reader that accepts all types of
cards. All that said, once in a while I do the USB method when I
have just a few files to move and am on the run 'cause it's so dam
FAST!
