When reading on the list that most kde games start to
support themes I had the
idea whether we should think about introducing color-blind
(or similar) themes
into the games. This might be a nice addition to KDE.

This probably mainly affects board games where the pieces
are distinguished by
colors. I suppose color blind people cant play these games
at all. By making
a theme which replaces the color-coded pieces by geometrical
forms it is
probably very easy to equip our games with this added
benefit.

As (partial) color blindness is relatively widespread this
may be a larger
benefit than we think.

I dont know whether other diablements are affected by the
games or can be
tackled to easily. But I though I bring it to attention and
we can discuss
it.

I am certainly open to creating theme variations enhaced for
those with
color-blindness or in need of enhanced contrast. Are there
a set of design
guidlines somewhere for creating graphics for high contrast,
color-blindness,
etc?

And isn't color-blindness just an inability to see certain
colors, not all of
them? Better check wp, educate myself.

Perhaps we should make it a goal to have a high-contrast and
a color-blind
theme in all KDE svn games before KDE4?

It would be nice if we could hear from disabled users or
accessibility experts
on this.

Excellent point. Seperate accessibility themes may be
necessary but as a
general rule it would be so much better if themes could try
to make use of
both colour and texture or pattern so that the default
themes are more
user friendly out of box. The extra affordance provided by
textures
benefits _all_ users as is almost always the case with
accessibility
features. Hopefully this will serve not as a burden but as
another
opportunity for artists to show off their creative flair by
adding subtle
details to their artwork.

(If you ever played Puzzle Bobble you might notice that each
bubble
contains a creature making them somewhat distinguishable by
texture.
Frozen bubble unfortunately did not include bubbles with
patterns but
Monkey bubble* did include ptterns in their default theme.)
