panel won't hide after update from 3.5.5 to 3.5.7

just updated from kde 3.5.5 to 3.5.7, now for some reason my
panel 
absolutely refuses to hide like it used to. despite being
set to hide 
immediately after the pointer moves away. changing the
settings to 
different values, applying, exiting and restarting KDE -
makes no 
difference.

makes me wish i hadn't even tried updating to 3.5.7 ...

FWIW, the panel decided on its own to start hiding again.
This was 
BEFORE fixing the 7 broken packages that the update had left
me with ...
