Inserting remote images as layer

The problem was that remote images were first copied to
local. The import code 
didn't wait for that -- and I guess that really large local
images would have 
had the same problem. We didn't take into account the async
nature of 
openURL(). I think I have fixed it, but please test the fix
I just checked in 
for 1.6 for regressions!
