Thread: Problem with Kontact on ubuntu 7.10

Problem with Kontact on ubuntu 7.10
user name

I'm using kolab 2.1 with about 10-12 clients.

Al clients runnings Linux and KDE Kontact on kubuntu 7.04

My PC was upgrade to kubuntu 7.10, wiht the "more
stable and performance"
KDEPIM from Enterprise branch (Kontact 1.2.4 enterprise
0.20070907.709405).

But with this version i have found two times my INBOX
empty!! Witouth
apparently reason. And in other time i have found the Send
empty.

A moment before the INBOX was ok, i have update my IMAP
subscriptions and
after a new e-mail check the INBOX was empty.

I have found this problem on two different PC but with the
same kubuntu
version (7.10).

This is a very big problem! Is only an ubuntu problem? The
clients with 7.04
don't have this problems.

Have you checked the Kolab bugtracker for bugs in the
Entrprise version? I
remember seeing quite a few - you can have a look at

https://intevati
on.de/roundup/kolab/

I'm actually quite interested in experiences with Kubuntu
7.10 and the
enterprise client, as we might go down the same road. The
problem I see is
that while Kubuntu has decided to add the enterprise version
of Kontact
already, this version seems far from
"production-ready" when looking at the
bugtracker. On the other hand, this version has a lot of
features that the
old proko2 version does not have, which makes it potentially
very attractive
for some of our users...

Thomas

Yes, i have checked the bug tracker, i have found many bugs
of kontact
enterprise that i have experienced, in particular my kontact
crash frequently
when i move many mail from online to local folders or
vice-versa.

But i haven't found my specific problem, i have experienced
also yesterday,
when i change my IMAP subscriptions kontact crash at the
next check mail,
restart kontact and the "Sent" folders was purge!
No more email in its.

Well as a long time Kubuntu user I thought I would wade in
on this topic

I am using the new 'enterprise' kontact in kubuntu and crash
it does...sadly a
lot. Moving large amounts of emails, deleting imap accounts
and pressing too
many buttons at once all seem to be things that 'upset' the
kontact program.

That said the new functionality is really useful like being
able to move
folders between imap accounts (takes about 50 attempts tho
because of the
afore mentioned crashes!)

I have suggested to Riddle that next year I may be starting
up a Kubuntu
Enterprise project, a fork of Kubuntu for the business
desktop that stops
striving so much for new functionally (as ubuntu always does
with its 6months
off of debian unstable) and instead focuses on getting a
really solid FREE
business distro out there with the power of deb package
management and the
notoriety of ubuntu. Maybe if I find some willing helpers
for that program we
can give kubuntu the care and attention it needs to make it
play nice with
kolab, which btw i still can not get to install on kubuntu
7.10.

Lots of work needed to get it running anywhere near as
smooth as opensuse.

Hm - as a *desktop*, my experiences with SuSE (10.0 in our
case) are very
mixed. With the proko2 client, we have *lots* of vague
problems here (mails
disappearing, events disappearing, todos disappearing,
contacts disappearing)
that we just cannot track down (see several mails of mine to
this list and
-devel and several bug reports). This has lead to a general
"Linux is
unreliable as groupware workstation" attitude amongs
some of our users,
unfortunately. I'm still busy trying to find out what's
going on (we just had
a survey in order to get some more and more informative
feedback), but I was
hoping that Kubuntu might fare better. Given what I read
here, I'm wary with
regard to the Enterprise client (well, it *is* still under
development,
AFAIK). Might be a good idea to get the proko2 client
running instead...

I'm using Kontact enterprise with Kolab server and we even
use it in
production for customers for quite some time now, about 8
months. However,
our Kontact Enterprise is installed on Ubuntu as opposed to
Kubuntu. As for
the crashes that you are experiencing, which kontact
enterprise revision
number do you have? and could you give more information as
to how one can
reproduce the crash?

Are you using DIMAP(disconnected IMAP)? if so, I had a
similar problem as
above and solved by Rebuilding cache and refreshing broken
indexes of the
folders. To do this right-click on the folder and choose
Troubleshoot IMAP
cache.

Hope that helps...

For us Kontact enterprise with Kolab on ubuntu has proven to
be without any
show-stopper issues. If there is any issues you are
experiencing with Kontact
enterprise on ubuntu, please post them, it would be great to
share

I think the main point here is that 20070907 not the latest
for the enterprise branch and it might be directly build
from a SVN state
where things were broken. We are actively fixing problems in
there
and from time to time make a snapshot which we do quality
testing
for KK customers.

See
http://apt.intevation.de/dists/etch/unstable/source/
for the revision numbers that are currrent and have seen
some testing.
Critical issues with them will be fixed by us very soon
(usually for the next
one).

I suggest trying a new Kubuntu package from
kdepim_3.5.6.enterprise.0.20071025.729306.
As Kolab developers we are much interesting in getting
something like
http://kolab.org/mill
running for Kubuntu package, help welcome.

As with most other software, best is to have a contract with
somebody
that makes sure critical issues are addressed timely.

Kolab-Konsortium is providing such contracts and we make the
software results
available to everybody. Thus if somebody pays us to make a
reliable Debian
Sarge package, we do so and everybody else can use it. The
proko2 branch
appeared this way and so the very reliable Debian Sarge
packages from it.
Also Univention has a reliable KDE Kolab client packaged
based on our services.

Thus we know that the proko2 branch is very reliable, but
good operation
does not only depend on what we do in the branch, but also
in the other KDE
libraries and other configurations. KK can support this as
well, but we need
to ramp up this to a point for each configuration which is
quite an effort.
As we have no customer paying this effort for OpenSuse 10.0,
we cannot
do packages with the same quality. Despite we would like to.
:(
It also seems Novell wa not interested enough so far (we
hope the change
this as Kolab gets more and more important).

This is just an explanation why things are as they are.
And if you run a GNU/Linux workstation, you should look for
a vendor
doing the support even when you do not run Kolab or
Kontact.
The problem with most vendors (e.g. Novell and Redhat) is
that they do
not have attractive offers for a small number of users and
low budget.
They might be facing a problem similiar to the one I have
described
for the Kolab-Konsortium above.

When you are compiling things yourself, the enteprise35
client is getting
increasingly interesting to check out and try.
Kubuntu thus did the right thing to package it,
they might just have picked a bad version.
There will be occasional issues with it, but we are fixing
them actively.

Best Regards,
Bernhard
