We had the most wonderful opportunity today! One of our
pediatricians,
(who is fairly new to practice and has already shown us some
real lack of
understanding about breastfeeding) had a 36 week baby today.
The nurse working the delivery was ready to take FULL
advantage of the
situation. The OB had taken his sweet time about getting
the baby to mom
( and insisted on having a weight first) so baby's temp was
a bit low and
sure enough, the initial blood sugar was 40. The RN
discussed the
situation with mom, assisted her with getting baby nursing
and WALAA!!!
the temp and blood sugar both came up and stabilized.
None of us were surprised, but we hope this will deepen this
pediatrican
mom's understanding of how important S2S and early nursing
are.
Next, we'll try to make her understand that telling a mom to
"pump and see
how much milk you are getting" is just asking for
trouble!

time for
breastfeeding babies.....
