I have never bought a screen without knowing the number of it. But
since you have to take it out to put in the new one anyway, I don't see
what the problem is.
I buy screens from Ebay quite often. In fact, it is just about the
only source I use for repair jobs. If you are careful and ask a few
questions, it is not hard to get a good screen at a fair price there.
Most sellers will tell you if the screen has any problems up front,
but there are a few who have a bad attitude and if you don't ask, they
will claim it is not their problem if the screen has a line of dead
pixels or such.
