If you
want to copy what is on the present hard drive exactly your best bet is to clone
from one to the other using something like Norton ghost. I have a system where I
use my desktop in it's native W2k environment to boot then put the original
drive and the new one on the secondary controller master and slave (in the case
of laptop drives I have to use an adapter of course, easily and cheaply obtained
at most IT suppliers that carry cabling items). I use Norton Ghost to duplicate
what's one the original to the new but never boot either from my desktop or
Windows plug n play will pickup on all the desktop hardware.
Then
take the new drive once copied and put it in the laptop and give it a try. If
all is well then you can use your desktop machine to dlean off your old hard
drive in case you want to give it away or sell it unless you want it around as a
backup.
Another option is a USB HD case with the new one and use Ghost to
transfer your boot drive image to the new one in the external case. Once done
swap them and you can always use the old reformatted drive in the external case
as a backup or overflow drive.
There
are probably shareware and freeware imaging utilities around that do similar
things to Ghost but I have had it around and it works well so that's what I
use.
