Sony PCG-FX210 laptop repair question......

I have this laptop and really like and hate to part with it right now,
but it needs a bit of help in order for me to continue using it. So I
guess I just need a little advice from those of you who repair laptops.

The dc jack in the computer is broke so it's not making a good
connection when I try to power it up. So that piece needs fixed. I
had my hubby open the computer up to see if it is something he can
fix, but since it requires sodering, he doesn't want to take the
chance of screwing up the motherboard. So I checked around my area
for a repair place. Found a local computer/laptop repair biz who will
do it for $60, I supply the jack. Now, I don't know anything about
this repair place, never heard about their service from other
customers - are there any questions I should ask before I have him do
it? Is the price reasonable for the work? Do I ask them what would
happen if my motherboard got broke while they were sodering the piece?
(Would I be insulting the tech but asking him the question?)

Next piece is the left hinge, its broke. Laptop still opens and
closes and the hinge moves a little, but the housing around it pulls
apart when it's open. Hubby can't figure out how to open the lcd
housing to see if it's just the hinge or more to replace. Would any
of you know how to get the housing apart? My screen still works great
so if I can fix whats broke, I'd rather do that. What's your opinion
in screen hinge repair?

My main reason for keeping this laptop is due to the fact when we
travel, mainly to my mom's, she doesn't have a computer or internet
service so I like that my laptop has the phone jack and I can just use
dial up when I'm there. Plus, I really don't want to have to shell
out a grand for a new laptop.

Also, would any of you know which other Sony laptops use the same
parts as my FX210? Hubby's other thing was to look for another Sony,
maybe one that is slightly broke but could use the parts from my
FX210, and is a bit better in speed since mine is only a AMD Duron 800mg.

Thank you very much for your help! I really appreciate it!

LoriBeth,

I have a used Sony laptop that I am parting out. I know the power
jack is the same as yours. And I believe the hindges are the same. I
repair the same problem you have, except I provide the power jack for
the same cost. And yes if some yokel does not know what they are
doing can mess-up your board. If you are interested in the parts
leave me an e-mail.

Thank You to everyone who has responded to my question about my
laptop! They did help! I also need to check with my hubby about
what other parts we could use. I know he has mentioned to me that we
could use a bigger hard drive since mine is only 10gig. Also, it
turns out that he made a contact at work who can replace the dc jack
for me. I guess where he works, they also make their own computers,
so he can get someone to do the sodering on it for him there.

Also, something that I didn't get an answer for was about the screen.
Can the casing be pried apart and if so how? Or would it be better
to just buy the whole top piece? I think i only need the left hinge,
but can't tell for sure until it's opened up.

Thanks again!
LoriBeth
