Have a Dell 1100 Inspiron.  When you turn it on you get fans, power 

light, battery light, and for just a second the hard drive light 

flashes and goes off.  You get no video to the display on board or 

external monitor.  I have tried it with battery and with out.  

Any suggestions?

Try 
replacing memory first, sounds like bad memory.
