The most common problem I have found in this series of laptops is a
standoff under the front edge of the video card comes loose from the
motherboard. You can't get to it without taking the top plastic cover
with the touch pad off of the unit. After you get the top off, take the
3 screws out of the video card and lift it off. Under it will be a
smaller board, the battery charging controller circuit. The stand off
in question is under the front right hand corner of it. You can remove
that board, then resolder that standoff to the motherboard, put it all
back together, and it will probably be fixed. Done dozens of these, in
fact the 8100 is one of the laptops I hunt down on Ebay to refurbish for
sale.
