Have you tried to flash the bios? I have seen some weird stuff and a new bios flash took care of.

Subject: [Laptop_Repair] Sony Backlight issue

PCG-9S1L is the model. At first I assumed this was a typical case of
either the inverter was bad or the actual lamp was bad, both jobs I do
quite frequently. But what this unit does is when you first press the
power button, the backlight is on for the Sony splash screen telling you
which key to press to get into setup etc, then as soon as it starts to
boot, the light turns off! After replacing both the inverter AND the
whole panel and getting the same results, I have discovered that if I
press the key to go to setup, the light stays on! As long as I remain
in Bios Setup the light is on, and all looks normal. I can't find any
items in BIOS to control this, so I just reloaded the Defaults, Saved
them, and rebooted, but the same situation exists. As soon as the self
test is over and the system switches over and starts loading the
operating system from the hard drive, the light goes out. I have
determined that it is indeed an Enable feature, that is, the Enbale line
going to the inverter gets switched off, so I assume there is some way
to control this feature, but I can't figure it out.
