I have a HP Pavilion ZV5242qv laptop. When I turned it on last night
all I got was a black screen. I unplugged everything and tried again
same thing. I hooked it up to a desktop monitor still nothing. I am
running WinXP.
I can hear the computer booting and can see a very very faint image
like my yahoo messenger on the desk top. Any suggestions? It is a
little over 4 years old and out of warranty.

If you can see a faint image on the screen, indications are that you
have either a bad backlight inside the LCD Panel, or a failed inverter
which provides the 1000VAC or so it needs to light up. A failed lamp
often requires a screen replacement, although it is possible for someone
with experience and a good Dremel tool to change them without taking the
whole panel apart. changing failed inverter is pretty straightforward,
but knowing which item has failed is not.

I am surprised the external monitor didn't show your video. Did you
have it plugged in BEFORE you turned the unit on? That configuration
will normally cause the laptop to default to the external monitor. If
not, try letting the unit boot all the way up into windows, then use the
Fn key in combination with one of the F keys up top with the symbol for
an external monitor on it and see if you can make it switch over.
