WOW that makes sense now! I am going to try this as soon as I get home.
IF it displays on the external monitor what next? Is this something that
I can fix? I won't have access to the internet tonight and will check
back with you in the am with the results.

I hope you understand that the issue of being able to see video on the
external monitor is merely to confirm that the problem is the LCD panel,
not the motherboard. Which I am about 100% sure of anyway since you can
see the image still existing on the LCD panel. the best you can hope
for now is that the problem is the inverter and not the lamp inside the
LCD panel. But that is not always easy to determine. And You are going
to have to remove the front plastic bezel around the LCD screen, whihc
usually is a matter of lifting the rubber feet ocvering them up, then
unscrewing the screws, all of them, then carefully prying up the bexel
without cracking the LCD panel doing so. sometimes they put double back
tape along the edges to make it look better, but it also can make it
very hard to remove safely.

when you get the bexel off, you will see the inverter circuit board,
usually below the LCD panel, plugged into the ribbon cabe going to the
motherboard on one end, and the pink/blue/ white wires from the lamp
plugged into the other end. This is the part you might be able to
replace on your own to save a few bucks. You will not be able to replace
the lamp if it is bad, and replacing the whole screen is also more
difficult, as well as costly. (Generally about $250 or more) But if
you take a chance and buy an inverter and that doesn't do the job, you
will be out $$ already and still have to pay someone else to do the
proper repair. None of these tasks we are discussing here are really
do-it-yourslef jobs for the average user.
