Hi! New guy here. Not a repair professional, just a diy guy.

I've alway fixed my own pc's, and those of family/friends. Sometimes
I win, sometimes I don't.
Anyway: I've got two hp 1000dv laptops with similar problems. Both
have no power leds at all with AC adapter and/or battery. AC is
good, battery is ok. Did all the standard troubleshooting, points
to "board failure".
Ok..HP #1 is really clean, nicely cared for...BUT was used on a bed
a lot, so probably overheated?
HP #2 was used on a desk with a cooler pad. But taking it apart..I
find the cooling fan really badly plugged and lots of ick and junk
all over inside it. However: This one, after taking off
memory,cd,hd, screen,remove/replace the button battery...down to the
board...plug in the AC and it powers up. Fan runs, leds on, etc. I
don't know what I did to cause this miracle, but maybe something
wasn't seated or something? I'd like to clean it up and put it back
together. I'm hoping to get one working out of this pair.

I'm guessing, after reading a lot of archive posts...that board
failure on these is pretty common? And if that's the deal, not much
a diy guy can do? I read some posts that refer to a fuse...so far, I
can't find anything like that.
Any suggestions?

Thanks!

absolutely never use a laptop on a bed, does not allow for proper cooling for one thing!! i would say to both items while they are apart is to clean both fans or replace them if they are really bad. if they dont spin nice and smooth then they should be replaced! just spin them with your finger and you'll see if they are or not. i would also remove the cpu and reseat it and also clean the heatsink really good and put some new paste on. clean out the mainboard with some canned air also. ;you could also have some bad memory with #2 booting again with all things removed. with it booting again i dont think the fuse is bad. keep us posted. good luck.

These suggestions are from my experience with a HP ZV 6000 that even had fluid spilled into the keyboard. item was stripped down to the mainboard cleaned and everything that could be removed was! works like brand new again.

I stripped one of these dead HP 1000dvs to the motherboard, powered it
up without the screen and it ran about 30 seconds then shut down.
Hooked up the screen, ran about 10 seconds and shut down. Sprayed
cooler on the cpu and it would stay on as long as I kept it cooled.
I'm going to take the chance that it is just the cpu, and bought one
on Ebay for $15.

What do you think my chances are that it is just the cpu?

My best,
Dan
