sprayed cooler on the cpu?????? did you not have the heatsink and fan on? that is not a good idea really. try and reseat the cpu and see what happens. i havent really seen a cpu go bad, but i could be wrong, more likely another component, memory, inverter, etc. you could try the cpu from ebay but use a heatsink and fan though when you power it up.

I stripped one of these dead HP 1000dvs to the motherboard, powered it
up without the screen and it ran about 30 seconds then shut down.
Hooked up the screen, ran about 10 seconds and shut down. Sprayed
cooler on the cpu and it would stay on as long as I kept it cooled.
I'm going to take the chance that it is just the cpu, and bought one
on Ebay for $15.

What do you think my chances are that it is just the cpu?

My best,
Dan

Yep...
I kept the heatsink and fan on, but sprayed cooler into the intake
to boost the cooling. Then it would stay on. I'll try reseating the
cpu though. There is no heat transfer paste (whatever you call it!)
on the cpu/heatsink contact. Is it ok to add a dab there?
Because that extra cooling on the cpu was the only "variable" that
made it keep running, I'm assuming the problem is related to the
cpu. But...I'm no expert!

Where/how do I find/test the inverter? The way these things
act...one is completely dead...zero leds on, no sign of any
power...that I first thought it had to be something at the head of
the power sequence...like a bad switch, or a fuse. Would a bad
inverter make it act like this?

Also, the fact that the one that shows some life would shut down
very quickly with the screen attached...would that be a video chip
problem?

Thanks for the help. It sure would be nice to get these running!
Dan
