Ardel's reference to the lid switch is definitely worth following up
on.
Another thing, although its admittedly a long shot, is to check the bios
setup for brightness controls (usually under power management settings).
It sounds like you are getting a good image, but no backlight.....there
just aren't many things involved. Power supply to the inverter - lid
switch - brightness control - harness to the backlight lamp (usually
damaged right at the hinge) - lamp.
Only thing you can do is dig in and test your way thru the chain of
components.
