I have an Inspiron 1150 that has an unusual problem. When I connect
the AC adapter the laptop will charge the battery normally. However,
if I try to turn the laptop on with the AC adapter connect the laptop
will hang during POST and display a flashing cursor on the screen. If
I let the battery charge and disconnect the AC adapter before pressing
the power switch, the laptop will complete the POST, load the OS and
function normally until the battery discharges. I have the original
Dell AC adapter and also got a spare Dell adapter to try but I have
the same problem with both. Any suggestions?

About the only thing I can conclude from this behavior is that the bios
chip is having a hard time deciding if you have an "acceptable"; charger
plugged in and never is able to take action to either enable full power
operation or not. The center pin on your AC adapter plug is not of any
use whatsoever, except that Dell in their infinitie wisdom decided it
would be a good idea to put an eeprom INSIDE the wall adapter, and it
spits out a data stream whenever the adapter is plugged into the
laptop. This data stream goes directly into one of the pins on the bios
chip, and if it can't read the data properly, either because the eeprom
is bad, the cable is bad, the jack is bad, the jack is loose, or some
other component in the path to the bios chip is bad, if that happens,
the bios chip will not let the laptop run full power, and some varietys
of this series, like the 5150, will not even let you run the laptop from
the AC adapter or charge up the battery. I have a drawer full of
motherboards from 5150s that will work just fine as long as the battery
is charged up. But they will not charge a battery nor will they operate
from a good AC adapter. Pretty stupid.

So I assume you are having a problem similar to that, although not as
severe since you can at least run the unit from the wall adapter, and it
will still charge the battery. The best recommendation I have for
fixing this is to replace the DC jack on the motherboard with a new one
and properly solder it to the motherboard, but I am not sure that would
fix it.
