Thanks, Steve. I have roughly cleaned the IR glass, but only the upper face. I have not figured out how to safely remove the lamp yet -- I tried but heard some cracking sound so I gave up.
BTW, I did a series of calibration (in silverfast) and 2540 dpi scan of 6x9 format (no film inserted) in a span of 2 hours, and the streak patterns were all different. The scanner had been on for 3 hours. I think heat related problems can be eliminated.
Thanks for the advice. Let me try to figure out the exposure number if silverfast provides any.

Hi,
90 percent of th eproblems we see with the scanner is a result of an old bulb. Less so with the filters. If they are not leaking white light they should be ok. In the old software you are able to see exposure numbers. I'm not sure where to see the numbers with Silverfast. Numbers in the 60's and 70's mean you need a new bulb. It will solve the level and line problem
Another problem we find is that the IR glass is dirty and needs to be cleaned.

Many thanks to Sandy and Steve. The scanner is working after I calibrated the lamp, and did calibration in silverfast.
The first fault that lit the light when the stepping motor is reset before the 2nd pass is gone after lamp calibration. The randomly-stop- at-middle fault is gone after silverfast calibration.
I used a small screw driver that is used to repair large format camera to calibrate the lamp. It is not really something special.
To answer Sandy's question, the filters I have now are all serious warped, and have many scratches. But it seems that silverfast calibration compensates them. The are still light streaks left though. I'm experimenting compensating that using photoshop, if these streaks are not random noises.

First try opening up the lens to a recommended aperture, if you have not already done so.
Second, if the bulb is old it may need to be re-calibrated. I think you can find direction for
that at the www. leafstuff.com site. This is not easy because you need a special tool that
may or may not have been provided with your scanner.
BTW, why do you believe the filter set needs replacing? I am just curious how you came to
this conclusion. Is there a test for this?
