Dear Mike,
even inkjet printers produce a very fine screen
that needs a certain quantity of concrete samples
of the original. The relation is further in depth
explained in the sampling theorem of physics.
I have explained how SilverFast calculates input
resolution versus output resolution is explained
here:
http://www.silverfast.com/show/scanningconcept/en.html.
Even in contone printing (but most inkjet printer
do not have contone but also some kind of screen)
for details and edges a certain resolution is
required, otherwise edges become fuzzy.
