Digital Projects Laboratory Manager (Librarian I/II)
The University of North Texas Libraries Digital Projects
Unit is part
of the Information Technology Services (ITS) section of the
Libraries.
The Digital Projects Unit (DPU) is responsible for the
creation,
organization, deployment, and support of local digital
library
collections. The DPU develops and maintains the technical
infrastructure
for digital collections at UNT which include the Portal to
Texas
HistorySM http://texashistory.unt.
edu/ , the Congressional Research
Services Archive http://di
gital.library.unt.edu/govdocs/crs/ , and the
Libraries' general digital collections
http://digital.libra
ry.unt.edu/. In addition, the DPU provides
outreach to other institutions through grant-funded
activities,
generates revenue through contract work, and is involved in
state and
national level collaboration in the field of digital
preservation and
access to born digital objects. The DPU employs over 5
FTE's including
librarians, programmers, and support staff.
Summary of Position
The Digital Projects Laboratory Manager works in a team
environment for
creating and deploying online collections and oversees the
digitization
activities of the Digital Projects Laboratory. The Lab
Manager reports
to the Digital Projects Unit Head and creates and implements
workflow
for every step of the digitization process: planning,
organizing,
digitizing, creating metadata, performing quality control,
and finally
completing ingest into the digital archive. The successful
candidate
will bring a desire to provide access to high quality,
useful
collections to the University's patrons and the general
public.
Specific Position Responsibilities
Supervises daily operations in the Digital Projects Lab.
Works with the unit head to establish unit priorities.
Schedules and coordinates grant, contract, and in-house work
undertaken
by the unit.
Develops workflows and implements work processes.
Supervises student assistants, graduate assistants, and
practicum
students.
Provides training as needed for library staff and project
collaborators.
Plans and implements effective quality control methods for
ensuring
accurate and reliable digitization.
Coordinates with the metadata librarian and metadata team to
ensure
that best practices are utilized in describing digitized
objects.
Assesses digitization equipment and prepares and submits to
the Unit
Head equipment requests for purchases and upgrades.
Oversees the installation and maintenance of hardware and
software in
the Lab, including troubleshooting problems, ordering
replacement parts,
and installing parts when appropriate.
Stays abreast of current best practices in digital imaging
and digital
preservation.
Works with representatives from other departments to plan
digital
projects for collections they oversee.
Required
MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA accredited program, or
an
equivalent combination of a relevant advanced degree and
experience.
Knowledge of and experience with a wide range of digital
formats,
techniques, and equipment, as well as knowledge of standards
for digital
objects and metadata.
2 or more years of pre- or post-professional supervisory
experience.
Ability to work effectively in a team environment with both
technical
and non-technical staff.
Demonstrated project leadership skills.
Flexibility in adapting to changing priorities.
Familiarity with Dublin Core, METS, MODS, EAD, and other
digital
content and metadata standards.
Excellent attention to detail and the ability to exercise
good judgment
in implementing standards and rules.
Strong analytical skills.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desired
Experience with Linux operating systems.
Understanding of and experience with relational database
management
systems.
Knowledge of XML and related technologies.
Experience with programming languages used for data
conversion.
