Oakland University invites applications for the position of
Dean of the
Library. The Dean reports to the Provost and Vice-President
for Academic
Affairs, and serves on the Dean's Council and the
President's Strategic
Planning Group. This position offers an exceptional
opportunity to lead a
teaching library with an outstanding, student-centered
information literacy
program, and a library that highly values collegiality,
excellent services,
and the creative application of technologies to support
teaching, learning,
and research. As Oakland University celebrates its 50-year
anniversary, we
seek a dean who will represent and be a strong advocate for
a library at
the center of a dynamic, developing, and growing
university.
The Dean is responsible for administering and planning all
aspects of
library operations; participating in the university's
capital campaign and
developing an external fundraising program to sustain and
enrich resources;
developing and maintaining strong collaborative
relationships within the
library, university and surrounding communities; setting
grounded yet
visionary goals; and contributing actively to
university-wide strategic
planning. Oakland University librarians have faculty status,
and the
successful candidate will have a strong record of
scholarship, research,
and professional service to warrant tenure at a senior
academic rank.
Required Qualifications
Master's degree in library science or equivalent from an
ALA-accredited
program.
Minimum of 5 years successful and progressively responsible
administrative
or managerial experience in academic libraries.
Record of academic and professional achievement warranting
tenure at the
rank of professor or associate professor.
Record of successful fund-raising, with a strong commitment
to actively
pioneering external development initiatives within a
university setting.
Ability to foster a collegial and collaborative environment
with all
library personnel.
Ability to advance strong collaborative relationships and
promote the
library's role within the university.
Record of library management skills, including budget
management,
goal-setting, and strategic plan implementation.
Clear vision of the evolving role of an academic library
with information
technology.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Evidence of a strong commitment to equity, diversity and
professional
development of library personnel.
Desired Qualifications
Second master's degree or earned doctorate.
Experience in a collective bargaining environment.
Experience with faculty status for librarians.
