>/ developer (be it in a library or non-library
environment)?
I was a professional programmer/developer for almost ten
years, starting before the WWW portion of Internet was
around. The answer to you question can vary quite a bit,
depending on the type of industry, whether you are working
with a team or alone, and the type of website. Corporate,
library, small business, and university web developers
sometimes differ a lot in the specific skills they use on a
day-to-day basis.
Web programmers (as opposed to interface/layout/design
folks) are often under pressure to write code very, very,
very quickly. Extensive formalized testing, rigorous
development methodologies, formal versioning, etc. are
excellent practices (and important ones to learn), but they
are not always practical when you are handed an assignment
to produce a brand new bit of code in two hours.
There are several different types of web developer. The
four broadest classifications include programmers, system
administrators, artists, and layout/interface design
specialists. In the not-so-distant past developers were
expected to have all the skills from each of these
categories; nowadays, there is a tendency to have more
focused skills, and many more sub-specialties. Some
businesses have one or more people in each of those roles,
while in others one person is still expected to handle
everything (which is the case in most libraries).
In day-to-day practice, a good set of basic skills to have
for a one-person-shop web developer would be:
Coding/scripting/programming - PERL, PHP, ASP, ASP.NET,
JAVA, JavaScript, SQL, and experience playing with various
APIs (Google and Amazon, for example)
Databases - MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL, Oracle
Platforms - Windows environment, UNIX, and LINUX
Graphics - ability to use PhotoShop fairly well
Layout/Design - thorough understanding of CSS, XML,
JavaScript, effective interface design, effective layout
strategies, and (of course) HTML
Web-based technology changes constantly, so professional web
developers of any type have to be fairly rigorous about
keeping up with new developments and learning new skills.
You generally will not have any time at work to do that, so
expect to do a lot of self-education in your off-hours.
One of the most important things you can do is develop an
online portfolio of your work. At least some of the
websites should be for real groups or companies. One of the
best ways for a new developer to get experience with these
is to offer to do free websites for non-profit
organizations.
Good luck!

I guess that is part of the brilliance of the
campaign - the graphic triggers an emotional
reaction irrelevant to the message that broadens
the impact of the message. In your case, it
brought out a pirate, in others it might bring
out someone's inner leprechaun .

OK, it took a mudflap girl to get me to decloak after a
decade in the lurk zone. But...
Check out this camouflage very closely. I have a jacket made

Exactly, Robert. I think this image generates a gut
reaction in many people that they don't see beyond that to
what she really is--a silhouette of a girl reading.
I'm a native Californian living in Wyoming and webmistress
for the WyomingLibraries.org site. I've seen a ton of
action on my photos of her on my Flickr account http://www.
flickr.com/people/wyolibrarian Most people are very
supportive of this and even if they don't like the image
understand what we are trying to accomplish--trying to get
traditional non-library users to use library services like
the Chilton Automotive Service Guides. We need to go to
them and offer them what they want and need whether or not
they step foot in an actual library building.

So true! As a North Carolina native relocated to central
Washington I
live in a county 82 miles wide with twice as many bovine
residents as
humans, and with a top 25 PRCA rodeo. Whatever my opinions,
something
like this Wyoming project would be a HUGE hit here. They'd
probably give
the keys to the town to my Dean...if there are any keys.

Felt like sharing it with you.
I am sure ,our moods will definitely change to a magical
realm by looking at the pictures. But the thing is, Our
modern libraries cant give a competition to these historic
libraries as they are becoming digital to virtual day by
day.

Colleagues,
Following on the heels of my previous question on
transitioning myself
from informal "web guy" to a web professional, I
have another
question:
What qualifications (i.e. key skills, must-have experience)
are
required to be recognized by employers as a professional web
designer
/ developer (be it in a library or non-library
environment)?
Your input is much appreciated. Feel free to email me off
the list at

Thank you.

I'm not sure whether everybody on this list already knows
about this
or not, but I haven't seen any posts and I'm already seeing
a lot of
people in other communities start making use of it.
Aaron Swartz (who's also the technical lead on the Open
Library
project among about a bazillion other things) officially
released
<http://jotti
t.com/>http://jottit.com/ a few days ago.
Conceptually
Jottit is both simple and amazing. All it is a text box,
you enter
your text and viola! A page is created. This virtually
eliminates
the barrier to web publishing and is perfect for all of
those "Ohh I
just want to post this on a static webpage real quick"
moments where
even a simple blog is too much infrastructure.
Anyway it's a wonderful, simple and flexible platform and I
just
wanted to make sure that everyone was aware that it's out
there.

large number of digital collections spanning a wide variety
of content types and formats. Successful candidates will
have extensive experience managing information technology
projects. Working knowledge of digital library technologies
and experience in digital library projects will be regarded
very positively. Successful candidates will work as members
of a team to design, develop, document and support new or

Some things I'd be looking for if I was hiring for a
position like this:
Design Aspects
1) Grasp of design and usability. At least demonstration
that they know some common usability practices as well some
resources for finding out more. (Alertbox comes to mind)
Even better, they know how to do the testing as well.
2) Demonstrated knowledge about CSS and more modern ways of
creating webpages. Knowledge of techniques and
demonstration of various workarounds for IE. I'd like to
see that the person follows resources like A List Apart. A
good discussion of positioning nightmares of CSS would also
convince me they're not just parroting some of the pundits
on this issue.
3) Good artistic eye, an ability to make a clear display.
I'd like to see a variety of pages in a portfolio that shows
the range the person can do while still maintaining an
attractive page, good design and good usability.
4) Creativity and originality in the portfolio.
Developer side:
1) Good understanding of Javascript. Not just the ability
to modify existing scripts but explain to me things like the
event model, DOM, and maybe even how AJAX works. I'd be
very cautious of someone who seems to do a lot of cut and
pasting. Code reuse is a very good idea, but simply shoving
code in is a warning sign of cargo-cult programming.
Cargo-cult programming seems more common among web
developers than some others. Using a library or an api,
however, is a good sign.
2) I'd like to see experience in PHP and possibly Perl.
Some example code. Some discussion of various software
development methodologies. How do they test code, keep
track of modifications, collaborate with others? I'd like
to see someone who uses versioning and some form of quality
control, ideally unit testing and regressive testing.
3) Good understanding about web servers and the http
protocol. Doesn't need to be a wiz, but should be able to
tell when to use a GET or a POST at least. Ideally would
know enough about web servers to be able to configure them
and even do things like mod_rewrite for Apache.
4) No fear of playing around with new systems and web
applications. They should have some experience with things
like CMS, blog software, wikis from a perspective of the
publisher of information.
4) Ideally, some demonstration curiosity in new techniques
and languages. I'd look for someone who's played with Ruby
on Rails, Scriptaculous (http://script.aculo.us/)
and things like that. I'd avoid someone who is t
Ok, I realize that this is an unlikely find and also
probably describes some of my own biases. But overall I'd
look for someone who has some good fundamentals as far as
documentation, development, and design. Details can be
taught and new languages can be learned. It's harder to
predict how long good habits take to accumulate.
Personalities certainly can't be established very well in an
interview process, but they can be hinted at.
Enough babbling. Hopefully I haven't frightened anyone.

Thank you to all who provided some feedback and advice to
the question
I had regarding moving from informal web guy to formal web
professional. While having a MLS degree has helped me
become
recognized, I realize that possessing solid technical and
web skills
makes all the difference in landing a job.
In my spare time (yes, that huge chunk of time we all have
available),
I've managed to take courses in several software
applications
mentioned, including Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Flash,
and I've had
the chance to apply them in a real-world context, such as
creating web
graphics, simple movies, posters, and designing and managing
websites
and updating web content. The web design portion is
challenging but
seems to come naturally.
I've tended to stay away from the 'programming' languages,
relying on
colleagues or free scripts on the Web. But I see, judging
from the
responses, that I can no longer pass them by. Is it safe to
say that
having a good understanding of what these web programming
languages
can do is sufficient or should one become a proficient
programmer?
I am also very curious about new and emerging technologies
such as
RSS, wikis, blogs, podcasting, etc, and try my best to find
some
freebie software to test each of them out.
It's challenging; it requires on-going learning. But, above
all, it's exciting.

depending on the type of industry, whether you are working
with a team or alone, and the type of website. Corporate,
library, small business, and university web developers
sometimes differ a lot in the specific skills they use on a

The four broadest classifications include programmers,
system administrators, artists, and layout/interface design
specialists. In the not-so-distant past developers were
expected to have all the skills from each of these
categories; nowadays, there is a tendency to have more
focused skills, and many more sub-specialties. Some
businesses have one or more people in each of those roles,
while in others one person is still expected to handle
everything (which is the case in most libraries).

professional web developers of any type have to be fairly

do that, so expect to do a lot of self-education in your
off-hours.

large number of digital collections spanning a wide variety
of content types and formats. Successful candidates will
have extensive experience managing information technology
projects. Working knowledge of digital library technologies

I'd be very cautious of someone who seems to do a lot of cut
and pasting. Code reuse is a very good idea, but simply
shoving code in is a warning sign of cargo-cult programming.
Cargo-cult programming seems more common among web
developers than some others. Using a library or an api,
however, is a good sign.

Some example code. Some discussion of various software
development methodologies. How do they test code, keep
track of modifications, collaborate with others? I'd like
to see someone who uses versioning and some form of quality
control, ideally unit testing and regressive testing.

Personalities certainly can't be established very well in an
interview process, but they can be hinted at.

| Re: Qualifications for a Web
Designer/Developer |

Feel free to add your comments on or off the list
(siansleep gmail.com)
Thank you,
David

ten years, starting before the WWW portion of Internet was

depending on the type of industry, whether you are working
with a team or alone, and the type of website. Corporate,
library, small business, and university web developers
sometimes differ a lot in the specific skills they use on a
day-to-day basis.

excellent practices (and important ones to learn), but they
are not always practical when you are handed an assignment
to produce a brand new bit of code in two hours.

The four broadest classifications include programmers,
system administrators, artists, and layout/interface design
specialists. In the not-so-distant past developers were
expected to have all the skills from each of these
categories; nowadays, there is a tendency to have more
focused skills, and many more sub-specialties. Some
businesses have one or more people in each of those roles,
while in others one person is still expected to handle
everything (which is the case in most libraries).

professional web developers of any type have to be fairly
rigorous about keeping up with new developments and learning
new skills. You generally will not have any time at work to
do that, so expect to do a lot of self-education in your
off-hours.

an online portfolio of your work. At least some of the
websites should be for real groups or companies. One of the
best ways for a new developer to get experience with these
is to offer to do free websites for non-profit
organizations.
