I'm looking for suggestions for reasonably-priced
microphone, for use in podcasting/vodcasting (I'd want to
purchase 2)? Types that are both PC and MAC compatible (read
"idiot proof") would be useful. Thanks for all
replies!

We use and recommend the ElectroVoice RE20 with a Firebox,
but this is
closer to the gold standard and might not meet your
definition of
reasonably priced.

One thing to remember is that Apple long ago got rid of a
microphone
input on their machines. Therefore you would have to get an
adapter
(usually $40+) for a normal mic.
For a simple plug and play solution for a single narrator,
my suggestion
would be to try out a USB headset like those made
Plantronics or
Logitech. Depending on the microphone quality in the
headset, USB should
potentially provide better digital audio than the tiny mic
jack and
allow you to plug just one cord into a machine for
headphones and a mic.
And it'll save you from shelling out extra dough for an
adapter on the
Mac. It won't be radio station fidelity, but a good way to
start for cheap.
Something like this:

I ran into some issues trying to use inexpensive PC mics
with my Mac. I
opted to go with this product:
M-Audio Mobilepre USB ($180)
http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MobilePreUSB-m
ain.html
It will work with a Mac or Windows PC, and it's two channel,
so you can
run two mics (or other instruments) through it at the same
time. It's
also small and portable.
You can use pretty much any mic you want with it. We opted
for some
fairly inexpensive Shure's.

PS: To get an idea of the sound quality of the sound
quality, the
following link is to an Skype (internet telephone) interview
I did for a
radio show/podcast we recently started here at Villanova
called
Reference Radio.

s/
This was done with a $30 Logitech headset with some editing
in
Garageband, though with past experience I think the
Plantronics deliver
slightly better audio quality and a sturdier design.
