Assistant/Associate Dean for
Library Technologies

Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are seeking an
experienced, visionary, and creative leader for the position
of Assistant/Associate Dean for Library Technologies.
Reporting to the Dean, the Assistant/Associate Dean provides
administrative and programmatic leadership in shaping and
guiding the future of information technology and digital
initiatives as well as leading the development of strategies
that anticipate emerging technologies and identify new
services. This position works closely with colleagues to
develop and support an overall vision for information
technology at a time when computing, digital, and networked
resources are transforming the delivery of library resources
and services. The Assistant/Associate Dean provides
innovative and strong IT leadership within the libraries and
the broader university computing environment.
The Assistant/Associate Dean leads the operations of four
departments/units:
* The Digital Library Program (DLP, http://www.dlib.indiana.
edu/) is a partnership between the Indiana University
Libraries, University Information Technology Services
(UITS), and the research faculty with leadership from the
School of Library and Information Science and the School of
Informatics. The DLP develops and supports a wide range of
digital collections services, including the IUScholarWorks
institutional repository, the groundbreaking Variations
digital music library system, and numerous online text,
image, audio, and video collections. The DLP is currently in
the process of re-engineering IU's digital library technical
infrastructure around the open source Fedora digital
repository system, and DLP staff are active in national and
international efforts focused on digital library standards
and interoperability.
* The Library Information Technology (LIT) Department
supports public and staff information technology operations
throughout the Libraries, with a strong commitment to
exceptional service and support to faculty, staff, and
students. The department supports over sixty servers and
nine hundred workstations, utilizing a broad range of
technologies. LIT enjoys a reputation for being at the
forefront in the use of new technologies and is currently
leveraging virtualization and numerous open-source
technologies to further enhance service and support.
* The Library Information Systems (LIS) team is the
UITS component of projects in support of library systems
statewide. Major tasks are development and support of the
SirsiDynix Unicorn integrated library system; the Library
IUIE (Data Warehouse); and systems interacting with them
including delivery of electronic materials. It provides
support for library servers and interacts directly with UITS
infrastructure groups.
* The Web Development Unit led the implementation of
one of the first content management system-based library
websites. The IUB Libraries system serves as a model for
other institutions and has been cited as one of the best
library websites. The library's site has recently been
upgraded to provide enhanced resource discovery for improved
access to library electronic resources and services. (http://www.libraries.iu

Responsibilities: The Assistant/Associate Dean for Library
Technologies will:
* Develop and implement an IT strategic plan for the
IUB Libraries
* Lead the strategic development of digital library
services at Indiana University, including services in new
areas such as data archiving and digital preservation
* Set the stage for local innovation in online library
services, including advanced, integrated discovery systems
and better online access to library collections
* Direct the development and support of SirsiDynix
Unicorn, the integrated library management system, for all 8
campuses of Indiana University, Ex Libris' SFX for 7
campuses, and SirsiDynix Single Search for 7 campuses
* Manage a budget of $3.3 million and lead a staff of
46 FTE, including librarians, and
professional/administrative and support staff
* Develop strategic goals and objectives in
collaboration with the Dean, Associate Deans, and Directors
of the Libraries, and other campus units including UITS
* Define, develop, and build effective partnerships
and collaborations both inside and outside the libraries to
enhance the delivery of resources and services
* Take a prominent role in strategic planning,
budgeting, and communication with regard to information
technology services
* Represent the Libraries on information technology
groups and programs at the campus, statewide, and national
level, taking a leadership role as appropriate. Actively
participate in the Committee on Institutional Cooperation
(CIC) as a member of the Library Information Technology
Directors
University Environment: Founded in 1820, Indiana
University-Bloomington has grown from a small state seminary

over 39,000 students and 1,800 faculty. With a

systems in North America, providing strong collections,
quality service and instructional programs, and leadership
in the application of information technologies. The IU
Libraries system consists of eighteen libraries on the
Bloomington campus, five libraries in Indianapolis, and a
library at each of the six campuses across the state. The
IUB collections include more than 6.6 million books,
journals, maps, films, and audio/visual materials in over
900 languages. The collections support every academic
discipline on campus, with an emphasis in the humanities and
social sciences. Users can access more than 400 databases,
43,000 electronic journals, and 224,000 electronic books, as
well as locally developed digital content. The IUB Libraries
are active members of regional and national associations and
consortia including the Committee on Institutional
Cooperation, the Association of Research Libraries, Center
for Research Libraries, the Digital Library Federation
(DLF), and the Research Libraries Group. In addition, IUB is
a founding member of the LOCKSS and CLOCKSS and plays a
leadership role in the DLF Aquifer initiative.
University Information Technology Services (http://uits.iu.edu/ ), with
offices on the Bloomington and Indianapolis campuses,
develops and maintains a modern information technology
environment throughout the university in support of IU's
vision for excellence in research, teaching, outreach, and
lifelong learning. UITS provides tools and services to
support the academic and administrative work of the
university, including a high-speed campus network with
wireless access, central web hosting, a rich selection of
free and low-cost software for personal use, tools and
support for instruction and research, massive data storage
and one of the world's fastest supercomputers for data
analysis and visualization.
Qualifications: An MLS, MIS or appropriate advanced degree
is required, plus a minimum of eight years of substantial
and progressively more responsible experience in management
of information technology in a research library. Proven
record of technology leadership and expertise. Experience
in project and systems management. Ability to function in
and promote a collaborative working environment while also
providing effective leadership. Evidence of successful
supervisory experience, mentoring of staff, and strong
management skills. Solid record of working with all levels
of library personnel, as well as faculty and students. A
documented record of collaboration with units within the
library as well as with central computing is required.
Excellent analytical, interpersonal, oral and written
communication skills, and a record of dealing successfully
with organizational change. Demonstrated knowledge of
trends in digital libraries, information policy,
collaborative technologies, scholarly communication, and the
storage, management, preservation, and delivery of
information. Evidence of a record of professional
involvement and contribution.
Preferred: Demonstrated success in securing funding from
federal and private agencies

Classification: Classification of this position is dependent
on education, qualifications, and experience. It may be
filled as an academic (librarian) or non-academic
(professional) appointment. If the position is filled as an
academic appointment the title will be Associate Dean for
Library Technologies and the candidate must have the ability
to meet the responsibilities of a tenure-track appointment;
such an appointment includes eligibility for sabbatical
leaves. If the position is filled as a non-academic
appointment the title will be Assistant Dean for Library
Technologies and will not be a tenure-track appointment.
