POSITION DESCRIPTION

CONSIDERATION.
Under the general supervision of the Automation Services
Manager, the Automation Services Coordinator provides
technical support, monitoring, problem determination and
troubleshooting of Rochester Public Library computer
hardware, software, networks and related equipment.
Responsible for troubleshooting Rochester Public Library
computer equipment including networks, personal computers,
and printers; configuring, installing and maintaining local
and wide area networking cabling and related equipment;
assuming a backup role for certain duties of the Automation
Services Manager and City IT and performing related duties
as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
*A. Install and support software and equipment
1. Install new hardware and software
2. Ensure that all software is at the current
version/release level and performing to specifications
3. Install and maintain equipment designed for in-house
setup and support
4. Work with outside vendors assigned to support in-house
equipment and software
5. Monitor system performance of the public and staff local
area networks, CD-ROM network and wide area network systems
6. Participate in end-user training and make recommendations
for formal training
7. Share after hours emergency on-call duty with other
computer center personnel.
*B. Maintain LAN and WAN communication networks
1. Troubleshoot any networking problems with data
connections, cabling, etc.
2. Configure routers and firewalls, modems and personal
computers ensuring proper security protocol
3. Monitor patron dial-up function
*C. Provide technical support services
1. Provide recommendations for the design and implementation
of customized application software
2. Troubleshoot and develop solutions to technical
processing problems
3. Research and implement methods to improve the performance
and utilization of the Computer Center resources
4. Provide technical assistance to personnel in the
organization
*D. Assist Library Automation Systems Manager in planning
library automated business process.
1. Evaluate, recommend and implement new technologies when
appropriate
2. Assist Library Automation Systems Manager in planning
changes and additions in hardware and software
3. Keep current on network, hardware and software issues
through journals and other means of communication
*E. Procure, track and dispose of technology assets that are
used to deliver business application services to the
organization
1. Maintain an asset inventory that documents all asset
activity and business application links
2. Maintain vendor relations to ensure maintenance and
licensing agreements are current, viable, and cost-effective
3. Maintain assets according to schedules that meet all
compliance requirements and service level expectations
*F. Perform Cold Fusion/Web2/API/PHP technical programming
as needed related to the ILS system
1. Use basic programming skills to create code that
accomplishes library goals
* G. Work with team members to maintain system integrity and
incorporate changes into the library IT environment
1. Communicate planned changes and describe how they will
impact the production environment
2. Develop and maintain a testing environment and procedures
to ensure that changes will operate as designed
3. Conduct formal meetings with stakeholders to review
readiness prior to implementing changes
4. Implement changes to the production environment
5. Conduct reviews of completed and planned changes at
regularly scheduled team meetings
*H. Work with team members on a cost-effective plan to
resume essential business operations in the event of a major
business interruption
1. Ensure that backups of critical systems and data are
performed reliably
2. Maintain a prioritized inventory of infrastructure
components and applications that support key business
processes
3. Regularly test the recovery plan and take action to
resolve issues highlighted by the testing
I. Stay abreast of changes in the industry and provide
recommendations for implementation
J. Provide any other necessary problem solving tasks that
may arise to solve end-users technology
needs
K. Perform other assignments as required.
*ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in computer science or related field and
three years experience troubleshooting computer hardware,
software, installing and maintaining local and wide area
communications networks and/or equivalent combination of
education and experience.
DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE:
* Experience with Novell Netware or Windows 2003 Active
Directory networks
* Experience with network operating systems (LAN/WAN),
network security, html, Cold Fusion, TCP/IP, computer
hardware, Microsoft Office Suite, SQL Server and Unix/Linux
* Experience with routers and firewalls
* Experience working with the public
DESIRABLE CERTIFICATIONS:
* A+ Microcomputer Certification
* Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer (MCSE)
* Certified Netware Engineer (CNE)
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS:
Must have demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving
skills
Considerable knowledge of computer hardware and related
software, TCP/IP networking and data communications concepts
and capabilities
Ability to evaluate new technologies, analyze problems and
recommend effective solutions
Commitment to the standards and objectives of the library
Ability to sustain accuracy and work steadily, and to
organize and carry through assigned tasks without direct
supervision
Ability to communicate effectively both in writing and
verbally and maintain effective working relationships
Ability to create and maintain appropriate documentation
Ability to simultaneously handle multiple tasks and
establish work priorities
Ability to train others
Skill in the use of personal computer related hardware and
software
Skill in accomplishing work in a timely and effective manner

Lifting, pushing/pulling, or carrying of objects weighing up

Climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting,
and bending are sometimes required. Repetitive movements of
the hands are sometimes required.
Audio, visual, and verbal functions are essential functions
to performing this position.
The work is performed indoors.
