Hello,
I am new here and am hoping this is the correct list for
this question.
I am creating some custom applications for our website. One
thing I
would like to do is tie into our ILS so patrons can use
their library
card number and PIN number to login and use the web apps
(sort of like
using the catalog).
I would like to avoid tying into our ILS directly for
security sake and
was wondering if there is any third party software that
would allow me
to interface with it. We are currently using
Dynix/Horizon.
I always have the option of the patron creating a new
login/password for
these applications but that's just another thing they would
have to
remember. It would also make them more motivated to use
the
applications if it was already established for them.
Thanks for your time,

You may want to investigate using SIP (Session Initiation
Protocol). It
is used by many third party programs to validate information
from an
ILS. Dynix supports SIPS but I believe it is an add on
feature you have
to purchase. NCIP (National Circulation Interchange
Protocol) and the
open source OpenNCIP are to eventually replace SIP and also
may meet
your need. SirsiDynix also sells an NCIP based product. Info
oration on
OpenNCIP can be found at: http://openncip.org/

Allow me to correct myself: SIP stands for Standard
Interchange
Protocol as well as Session Initiation Protocol as I
previously stated
but Standard Interchange Protocol is more properly used when
referring
to the product used by libraries.

With Horizon, you should have SQL Database access. You
could probably
query that for access or, since every Horizon page has an
XML output,
you could use something like this:
http://ruk.ca/article/4632
-Ross.

Our on-staff developer wrote something like that, which
grabs patron
login information from our Koha installation's MySQL
database and stores
it in a PostgreSQL database, which the kiosk management
system he wrote,
LibKi, then uses for patron authentication on our public
Internet
computers. There's more info here:
