We're looking for a free, online, multi-user calendar
application to
handle room scheduling. The closest I've come was the
built-in calendar
app of a certain wiki product. If anyone has seen this done
successfully or has a suggestion, I'd really appreciate the
product
name. Thanks,
Steve Wilson, M.L.I.S.

I found Vcalendar to work well on our Intranet and I plan on
adapting it
for room scheduling soon.

To me there are at least 3 kinds of calendars:
-- Public events
-- Personal
-- Resource scheduling
At Michigan State we've adopted and adapted Virginia
Tech's public events
calendar, VTcal,so for with great success. It allows you to
have both a
general calendar and many sub-calendars. It's open source
PHP / MySQL. MSU
has made many local mods but not yet packaged them for
SourceForge.
I don't know how well it would serve in the role of a
resource scheduling
calendar but it might be worth a try depending on your
needs.
Suggestion: define up front what your calendar will and will
not do. Say
the word "calendar" and people expect many
different things of it.

ebcalendar.php for
scheduling our computer labs and it works very well for us.

Hi Steve.
We have used MRBS - http://mrbs.sourceforge.
net/ - for a few years and it
has worked well. HTH.

We are currently, or at least have been, booking rooms with
our III OPAC and
manually entering the dates on a WEB calendar, Corp Calendar
on Zope. See
http://www.
library.appstate.edu/calendar/ for our page that has
links to each
calendar. It does not have ical or vcal built in but it
wouldn't take much
to add it in because it is written in Python and is runningn
on Zope.
Although, there are products at http://www.schooltool.org
a> that I especially
like and have only tested earlier versions. They are
constantly developing
this tool and it has come very far.
From their site:
SchoolTool Calendar is our calendar and resource management
tool for schools.
SchoolBell is a calendar management system for small
organizations.
SchoolTool 2006 is an open source student information
system, projected for
availability the 2006-2007 school year.
We have been looking for a calendar to use campus wide and
there is a
comparison at http://ww
w.webmaster.appstate.edu/calendar/ .
Calendars we are looking at include SunONE, Calcium,
Exchange, Groupwise,
Meeting Maker, School(tool,bell,tool calendar), WebCalendar,
Web Event,
Zimbra, ActiveX, and UW Calendar. Our preferred criteria
includes RSS/XML,
WEB based access, Client based access, scheduling, synching,
import/export,
permissions granularity, filters or search, subscriptions or
includes or
layering, API/SDK customization, LDAP authentication, and
ADA validation.
What we mainly wanted was a calendar that displayed well on
the web, is
shareable, and customizable.
