The upshot of the new licensing agreement for Vista is you
get only 1
license transfer. No longer can a single license be moved
from machine
to machine to machine. What constitutes a 'device' is
unclear. What if
my MB dies? What if the HD dies?

This type of draconian control of a person's computer usage
is just the
sort of thing that makes me really dislike Microsoft.

If only I could get modern, good, cheap games on Linux, I'd
never run M$
again. EVER.

I may have to just take up console gaming and forget about
the excellent
world of PC games.

/gamesdb holds over 1400
'Microsoft games' that run on Linux, 100%.

I would disagree that the games that are
"supported" by transgaming work
100%. When Guild Wars came out a few years ago, I was very
excited to try
it, but my Windows laptop isn't a great gaming computer. It
worked well
enough so I bought the game while I kept an eye on Wine and
WineX (Cedega).

After a few weeks (months?) Transgaming 'Officially'
supported Guild Wars.
http://transgaming.org/gamesdb/games/view.mhtml?game
_id=3370
http://cedegawiki.sweetleafstudios.com/wiki/Guild_Wars

One would expect that if it was officially supported that it
would run well
enough to be playable. However after falling for the
"bait" and subscribing
to Transgaming (Cedega 4.1.1 IIRC) and not being able to
even load the game,
let alone play it, I was disappointed, but I still had hope
that the game
would be playable within a few updates.

By the time Cedega got to version 4.4.1 Guild Wars would
load, and you could
"play" the game, if you didn't mind the sound
cutting out on you after a
half hour, and a 50/50 chance of the gaming crashing out
between loading
screens; I allowed my subscription to laps and switched
completely over to
Wine. Not because games run any better (generally they run
about the same
after a little more config work) but because I wasn't
spending money on a
program that didn't preform as advertised. (Sounds like my
original reason
for switching to Linux years ago)

Since I have stopped using WineX/Cedega, I have been much
happier with my
Windows(tm) gaming in Linux. I have found the Wine apps
database more up-to
date with helpful tweaks and hints to get your application
running smoothly.

Here's the link to Guild Wars on Wine's webpage:
http:
//appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iAppId=2243

In conclusion: If you have a Windows(tm) product that you
would like to get
running in Linux, I would highly recommend trying it out in
Wine before
making the leap into Transgaming's world.

I've never tried Transgaming, but Paul's post is 100% inline
with
everything I've heard about them.
I think I'm going to order Dominions 3 and call it done.
Dominions 3
runs on Windows, Mac and
Linux out of the box even though the game is expensive I've
heard its
the bomb.

I've also had good luck with Unreal Tournament, the Quake
games and
Neverwinter Nights
(although Neverwinter doesn't really install on linux, you
have to do
some strange stuff to get
it to work). However none of these games were $10 in a
bargain bin at
any local retailers
until recently.

I would agree. I subscribed to WineX a couple years ago
but found that WineX
wasn't any more reliable at running EXEs than WINE was.

And, the problem with WINE is that even if you get an EXE to
run with a
particular release of WINE the very next release could break
your carefully
crafted setup and require you to play some more to get that
EXE running
again, IF EVER.

I use WINE for only one reason: to run the Windows version
of FireFox so that
I can see Macromedia's flashplay 9 videos on various news
sites.
