you see DELL offering a "WinSUSE" preinstaleld on
their leading hardware.

I checked and could find NOTHING which suggested that
Microsoft gave the
go-ahead for Dell to offer Linux preinstalled, INSTEAD of
Windows, on their
main line hardware.

This absence raises a question. The deal between
Novell/Microsoft was
announced last week BUT negotiations began for it THREE
YEARS ago. It seems
obvious to me that an agreement was reached months ago....
perhaps a couple
years ago, but the time wasn't right because VISTA was ready
to be released.

So, Microsoft has had MONTHS to tell Dell it's OK to put
SELS9 as the
pirmary/sole OS on their main line hardware, and to
advertise that combo on
their front page. Such an offering doesn't exist and
their front page is
void of any reference to Linux.

What does this mean? Microsoft never intended to support a
Linux distro, even
if it purchased 70,000 copies from Novell.

I've seen articles and interviews with Michael Dell
responding to
questions about their loyalty to Microsoft. He's been
quoted saying
that he's not being dictated by Microsoft in any aspect in
which
operating systems he is inclined to offer on their systems.

He is on record stating that the reason Dell isn't pushing
more linux or
decided to offer a supported linux option is there are too
many distros
with too many variances. He doesn't want Dell to be in a
Ford/Chevy/Dodge war. If they decided to pair up with one
distro all
the others will complain. If I remember correctly, it was
Ubuntu that
was trying to become the "Dell's Desktop Linux of
Choice". Michael
said that would step on the Red Hat users and Suse guys not
to mention
the other little guys.

I've thought the same thing for a long time. Freedom of
choice is
nice, but in this case, it's one of the major reasons that's
keeping
linux from becoming a contender for desktop operating
systems.
