Ubuntu questions

So I got a new machine for home.  Its an AMD x2 64 with a
couple of 
NVIDIA 7600 SLI'ed in it.
I'm running the i386 non-SMP kernel.  I might change this
if I get 
things working.
I can't get X to work on Ubuntu.  Has anyone heard of
troubles/successes 
with this setup?  The xorg.conf file looks fine but the log
complains 
that no screens could be found.

When I attempt to isntall/run the NVIDIA drivers from NVIDIA
they fail 
because it claims the libc isn't installed.  Any idea what
I can apt-get 
to get a full development environment installed?
